Awesome blog! Do you have any tips and hints for aspiring writers? I’m hoping to start my own site soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you recommend starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many options out there that I’m totally confused .. Any tips? Thanks a lot!

I understand completely! Take it from someone who has “been there and done that”, as in spent and wasted way too much money on the bells and whistles I didn’t need. First of all, RESEARCH! I cannot stress that enough. Who are the writers you love? What do their sites look like? Who will your target demographic be? What do you really want to write about? Collect and write down as much info as possible. Make your lists of priorities and perhaps a small budget to start – you will want a good server. Some servers offer “one-stop-shopping” for building your site, as well. Just be careful- RESEARCH how you want it to look and what you want your site to be able to do very specifically and THEN choose a template, if you’re gonna build it yourself. Don’t just go for looks- make sure the template has all the features that will meet your expectations, technically speaking. How interactive do you want your site to be? That’s huge in choosing a template. Many times, you`ll find a”lite” or free version of the look you want but you have to purchase the upgrade to get the interaction and technical capabilities you may be looking for. I went with HostGator which I really like a lot but when I found the look I wanted and built the whole thing from the ground up, I realized that I chose a template that didn’t include many of the things I wanted my site to be capable of doing. So I had to learn how to add plug-ins but some required certain codes and then? I was just in way over my head! I finally enlisted professional help from Dan Madsen, a brilliant web designer and he saved me.LOL My short form answer is research and learn as much as you can about the kind of sites that interest you, choose your top 3 and see what they have to offer. THEN, find a great server and see if what they offer, matches up with your new priorities. Plus, they will have people to help. Especially if you want to put a bit of cash behind it. To start and get it off the ground, you will get a server, which has a monthly or one time yearly fee and then you may want to purchase a professional template, like from wordpress. I hope this helps and GODSPEED! Erika
